1 - INTRODUCTION - Following the Trails of Ancient Greek Tragedy
After the fall of the Greco-Roman civilization, what happened to ancient Greek theatre? This is an exploration of historical memories and symbols of a civilization that gave us the theatre.
A journey through time following the trails of theatre from Ancient Greece, to the Golden Age of Pericles and the Athenian Republic, the fall of Athens, the rise of Rome and the era of the Roman and Byzantine empires. The search continues through the years of the Ottoman occupation, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Shakespeare and his relationship with Greece. We move on to the years of the Enlightenment, the American Revolution, the French Revolution and finally the Greek uprising of 1821 which resulted in the liberation of Greece. After hard struggles and the birth of the new Greek state, Hellas rediscovers its identity, its ancient philosophical and cultural roots and revives the half-ruined ancient amphitheaters.
